CHOOSING THE RIGHT ASSESSMENT

If you're unsure which type of assessment is right for you, you're not alone. Many people come to us with questions about what they’re experiencing and what kind of support might help.

Below, you’ll find a simple guide to help you understand the different assessment options we offer — and which one might best fit your current needs.

NEUROPSYCHOLOGY CONSULTATION

This is a one-off appointment that provides insight and direction without the need for formal cognitive testing.

  • You're experiencing changes in memory, attention, or mood and want to better understand what’s going on.

You’re seeking a clinical opinion but don’t feel ready, or don’t need formal testing.

You’d like to clarify whether a full neuropsychological assessment is appropriate.

  • A single, in-depth consultation with a clinical neuropsychologist.

A structured conversation about your concerns, history, and current functioning.

A written summary letter with observations, initial impressions, and recommendations for next steps.

TARGETED NEUROPSYCHOLOGY ASSESSMENT

This is a focused alternative to a comprehensive assessment and may also serve as an early screening for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment.

  • You’ve noticed recent changes in your thinking, memory, or ability to concentrate.

You’re recovering from a concussion, illness (e.g., long COVID), or burnout.

You or your whānau are concerned about possible early cognitive decline.

  • A clinical interview and brief cognitive testing session.

A concise summary report that outlines your cognitive profile.

Practical, everyday strategies and recommendations for support or follow-up care.

COMPREHENSIVE NEUROPSYCHOLOGY ASSESSMENT

This is the most in-depth assessment we offer and is often requested for formal reporting or treatment planning.

  • You’ve experienced a neurological event (e.g., stroke, brain injury, meningitis, hypoxia)

Your symptoms are complex, long-standing, or impacting multiple areas of your life

You’ve been referred by ACC, a specialist, or your insurer for a full cognitive and psychological evaluation

  • A series of appointments, including detailed clinical interviews and cognitive testing.

A comprehensive report describing your cognitive and psychological profile.

Personalised recommendations for rehabilitation, return-to-work planning, or ongoing support.
